Based on the experiences of the Green Map System and the China Water Pollution Map, Green Zhejiang started a collaborative interactive China Water Map especially for the Qiantang River based on a well-known crisis platform – Ushahidi. This map provides a platform for educating the general public about water pollution. It clearly shows the locations of pollution. Users can easily use the platform online or on their smart phones or iPad to interactively obtain water pollution information and report new incidences of pollution instantly via the online map or its Apple or Android applications. The information includes violations, water quality monitoring results and industrial pollution sources. It is in the hope that in the long run the program will (a) enhance transparency of environmental information; (b) urge governmental agencies and industries to take more prompt actions to mitigate environmental impacts; (c) increase public awareness and participation of water protection.
